"Although the Downliners Sect were among the first of Britain’s rhythm & blues groups and managed to release three albums and a multitude of fine singles during the 1960:s, they never got the kind of success they deserved. Nor did they get any respect."
Mike Stax:  from his book The Downliners Sect Story

A Multitude of Music

downlinerssect1.jpg

Formed in 1963 from the remnants of a Twickenham group called The Downliners. The Sect were the resident band at Eel Pie Island for part of 1964 and were signed to Columbia that summer. Despite a healthy number of singles, three albums and a ep they never managed the transition from the clubs to the charts. Part of their problems may have been their lack of original material and their image both musically, and in their physical appearance. A band which has existed as long as the Downliners Sect, a band which has been so faithful to their musical roots, a band which has never compromised or sold out to musical trends and still after all these years have the energy and feeling for their music-a band like that deserves both success and respect.

the original line-up:

Don Craine - guitar/autoharp/vocals

Keith Grant - bass guitar/vocals

Terry Gibson - lead guitar

Ray Sone/Pip Harvey - harmonica

Johnny Sutton - drums
